"What have we learned since Martin Luther King Jr. said the following? Have we made progress? If so, please share examples. What are the barriers?

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.

Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.

Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes.

Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

- Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)
"Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?" (c. 1967)

  1. I used to work very hard as a teacher in a school with largely middle east children but we had 74 countries represented in our school. There was a standard phrase used by the children when they didn't like what someone did or said on the playground..."I'll kill you" The first reaction to everything was to hit or fight. We spent many hours teaching the children to make a statement about how they felt " I don't like it when you..." Sometimes I felt there was progress but other times I felt we were losing. However, over the years I did see the integration of different parent groups and children's friendships. So, I think we are progressing. I always encouraged learning about each others traditions and drawing similarities of customs so that children learned how we are the same rather than the all too often "we're different" which I believe kept children apart. I also believe that if teacher's make a positive connection with children, they will always want to go back to that place of happiness and acceptance. Basically, we all want the same thing no matter where we come from. If we could try to wear the other person's shoes for a while before we make judgements, we will be able to have a peaceful world.
