"What have we learned since Martin Luther King Jr. said the following? Have we made progress? If so, please share examples. What are the barriers?

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.

Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.

Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes.

Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

- Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)
"Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?" (c. 1967)
Watch this movie.... do we Really see people or are we too caught up in the drama of our own lives to stop and think about another persons life.

What is compassion....
Karen Armstrong writes in her book, 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life, that "compassion derives from the Latin patior and the Greek pathein, to suffer, undergo or experience. It means to to endure something with another person."

Compassion is something which requires us to put ourselves in another person's shoes, to feel his or her pain as though it were our own, and to enter into his or her point of view. This is summed up in the Golden Rule: Matthew 7:12 "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets",  in other words, "Do not do to others what you would not like them to do to you" or, "Always treat others as you wish to be treated yourself."

What is the Charter for compassion? Lets find out by reading Karen Armstrongs book "Twelve steps to a compassionate life"  and sharing our thoughts here on this blog site.

Manotick United church! This is where  I work. I have been the minister here for one year and I am excited about the new year and all the opportunities that are waiting for us. Beginning with developing this blog, a place where congregants and friends can stop by and visit, chat and share ideas and thoughts, on the book we will be reading, "Twelve Steps to compassion" by Karen Armstrong, or on sermons as well as bible studies. So, here goes a new step into the future...or in the words of a hymn.......one more step along the world I go,
